You’ll spend two nights at the Karoo Gariep New Holme Karoo Guest House, nestled amongst trees that attract a wealth of birdlife this is where you’ll experience authentic Karoo farm living with all the comforts of home. Activities include early morning birding drives, a rowing adventure on the Gariep Dam where many species of inland birds can be spotted, and possible sightings of the Karoo’s ‘Shy 5’ – aardvark, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, cape fox and black-footed cat. Situated on the banks of the Seekoei River it has the only hippo population in the Northern Cape, and it is also where you can view the ‘Shy 5’.
Then to Oudtshoorn – the charming Klein Karoo town known as the ‘ostrich capital of the world’ where you’ll spend one night at the 4-star De Zeekoe Guest Farm, 7 kms outside Oudtshoorn. Its wide range of activities include hiking, birding, canoeing, stargazing, swimming and massages at Karoo Tranquillity, its new salon and the not-to-be-missed unique opportunity of ‘Walking with Wild Meerkats’ (Five Shy Meerkats). Other Oudtshoorn attractions include ostrich farms, museums, and the Cango Caves.
Then to Montagu, the quaint town that serves as the gateway to the Little Karoo, where you’ll overnight at the 4-star Art Deco-style Montagu Country Hotel. Here you can explore the wide streets lined with Cape Victorian national monuments, discover a wide range of wining and dining options, visit one of the many popular climbing spots in the mountains and for something different – book a tour to visit the nearby wineries in a classic vintage car from American Dream Cars.
And then it’s to Paarl, to spend one night at the Cascade Country Manor. Here you can explore the Paarl/Franschhoek region in the heart of the Cape winelands on a wine tour, and enjoy a wide selection of activities including wine tasting, scenic fynbos hikes, cycling, sampling local cuisine, visiting the magnificent Cathedral Cellar with its barrel-vaulted roof and large carved red wine vats.
